Last year, Swiss School of Business and Management Geneva introduced the revolutionary Sustainability Cockpit, a cutting-edge platform designed to measure and showcase the institution’s real-time environmental contributions through online education. By tracking metrics such as reduced commute hours, CO2 emissions, electricity savings, and plastic waste reduction, SSBM Geneva has cemented its role as a leader in sustainable education. This year, the results are even more impressive, further solidifying the university’s commitment to environmental conservation and innovation.
Commute Hours: A Leap Towards a More Sustainable Future
In 2023, SSBM proudly reported 86,831 fewer commute hours as a result of its online learning initiatives, a key figure captured by the Sustainability Cockpit. Fast forward to 2024, and that number has more than doubled, reaching an incredible 154,342.50 fewer commute hours. This reduction highlights the growing shift towards online education, which not only provides flexibility but also helps minimize the environmental footprint of the academic community. This dramatic increase emphasizes how students, faculty, and staff are embracing online learning, and in doing so, actively contributing to a more sustainable world by reducing the need for daily commuting.
Plastic Waste Reduction: A Continued Commitment
Last year, SSBM Geneva successfully saved 39,725 kilograms of plastic waste through initiatives aimed at reducing plastic consumption within the institution. In total, this commitment has grown stronger, with a total of 69,454.13 kilograms of plastic saved – nearly double the amount from the previous year.
By curbing plastic use and encouraging more eco-friendly alternatives, SSBM Geneva is actively promoting environmental stewardship among its students and faculty, reinforcing the importance of sustainability in daily practices.
Electricity Savings: A Testament to Energy Efficiency
SSBM Geneva’s focus on energy conservation continues to shine. Last year’s 326,629 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity savings were a significant milestone, but this year the university has exceeded expectations by saving an impressive 571,067.25 kWh. This massive increase underscores the effectiveness of SSBM Geneva’s energy–efficient strategies and its dedication to reducing the school’s overall energy consumption. These savings are not only helping the environment but are also a testament to how small changes – such as reducing in-person campus activities – can result in substantial long-term benefits.
Environmental Impact: Cutting CO2 Emissions on a Massive Scale
One of the most impactful metrics tracked by the Sustainability Cockpit is the reduction in CO2 emissions. Last year, SSBM Geneva celebrated a remarkable 1,403,203 kilograms of CO2 emissions saved thanks to its digital learning model. In 2024, this number has skyrocketed to 2,494,174.80 kilograms – an astonishing achievement that demonstrates the school’s ongoing leadership in climate action. This 77% increase in CO2 emissions savings shows that the institution’s shift to online education is playing a vital role in combating climate change. Through a more efficient and sustainable approach to learning, SSBM Geneva is setting new standards for educational institutions worldwide.
Contributing to Global Sustainability Goals
Through its Sustainability Cockpit, SSBM Geneva continues to contribute significantly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The dramatic reduction in commute hours and CO2 emissions directly supports SDG 13: Climate Action, while the institution’s focus on providing accessible, online education aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education.
By pushing the boundaries of sustainability in education, SSBM Geneva proves that academic institutions can be powerful agents of change, leading the way in both environmental conservation and educational innovation.
Looking Ahead: A Sustainable Future for All
As SSBM Geneva reflects on its incredible achievements over the past year, it is clear that the university’s commitment to sustainability is stronger than ever. The numbers speak for themselves: a 77% increase in CO2 emissions savings, a 75% rise in electricity savings, and a more than 85% increase in plastic waste reduction. These accomplishments are not only milestones for the institution but also crucial steps in the global movement toward a more sustainable future.
By continuing to leverage the power of online education and its Sustainability Cockpit, SSBM Geneva is setting a new standard for how educational institutions can lead by example – proving that sustainability and innovation go hand in hand.
